Fly fishing on the legendary Snake River under the shadow of the Tetons is truly extraordinary. Experience the ecological diversity and innate beauty of this protected mountain paradise first hand on a guided trip with Jackson Hole Trout.
The Snake River winds below the Teton and Snake River Mountain Ranges, through the valley of Jackson Hole, from its headwaters in Yellowstone National Park. Its banks and tributaries are home to bald eagles, osprey, moose, elk, deer, and more; it brings life to much of the valley. In its pools and eddies swim native, wild Snake River Fine Spotted Cutthroat Trout - a deeply special kind of trout that lives nowhere else in the world.
These beautiful fish attack flies with enthusiasm, and are a wonderful target for those new to the sport. But in secretive corners of the river’s braids lurk some hefty trout, which present a tantalizing challenge for more experienced anglers.
Young and old, novice and expert will find the Snake River to be an unforgettable fishery; cold, clear water, incredible scenery and a truly peaceful setting all combine to create the perfect backdrop to catch spectacular cutthroat trout.
As lifelong fly fishing and outdoor enthusiasts, we treasure the layers of connections that a day on the river can foster.
Fly fishing presents a plethora of opportunities to learn and develop skills both on and off the water. From fishing basics to casting tips, fly selection and entomology, to the history and ecology of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, we love to help guests expand their appreciation of the sport and the region.
We embrace the life lessons that come along with fly fishing. Not everything always goes as planned - weather changes, lines get knotted, flies get snagged - but these are opportunities to be patient, adaptable, & optimistic.
We love helping guests discover new connections to the river, the animals and landscape around them, as well as enriching their own relationships. The time away from the relentless ringing of phones and glow of screens invites a fresh pace for the day, and space for an authentic and unforgettable experience.
Jackson Hole Trout is dedicated to ensuring that your day on the river is not only safe and comfortable, but full of laughter, discoveries, and more than a few fish! We hope you’ll join us and experience an unforgettable day with us in the most beautiful place on earth.
Jackson Hole native Lucas Donaldson, head guide and owner of Jackson Hole Trout, aims to share his lifelong passion for fly fishing with every client.
While plenty of fly fishing guides express enthusiasm about the Snake River and other waterways around Jackson Hole, precious few can claim the depth of knowledge that Jackson Hole Trout owner and head guide Lucas Donaldson has. The reason for that is simple: unlike the vast majority of guides on the river, Lucas was born and raised right here in Jackson Hole. And he’s been obsessed with fishing since day one.
He caught his first trout on a fly at the age of five, but his love for fishing was born even earlier. Raised by generations of anglers, Lucas can’t remember a time that he wasn’t fishing with family or friends. He recalls passing summer days catching grasshoppers, and heading to the river the minute his dad was home from work. He’d perch on his dad’s shoulders while they waded from spot to spot and made casts, and gleefully reel in any fish that they hooked. Since childhood, Lucas has spent every day that he could traversing the banks of the Gros Ventre River, floating the picturesque waters of the Snake River, and exploring the countless lakes, rivers, and streams around his Wyoming home.
Lucas’ official fly fishing guide career began the summer he turned 20, and two decades later he still thinks it’s the greatest job on earth. When he has a day off you’ll find him fishing. He’s chased a wide variety of species in Alaska, British Columbia, Costa Rica, Mexico, and all over Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and Utah. He’s passionate about any variation on the sport: fly fishing, spin fishing, ice fishing, or saltwater fishing. He’s hooked!
When Lucas is not fishing (it happens occasionally!) he loves spending time outdoors. Whether he’s hiking with his canine sidekick, Mookie, camping with family, or grilling on the deck, outside is where he’s happiest. That’s another reason he’s one of the best fly fishing guides in the region: regardless of how many fish make it to the boat, or what kind of weather rolls over the mountains, Lucas makes sure that his guests are loving the wild outdoors as much as he does. His passion and enthusiasm are contagious, especially when it comes to a day on the water. Because for Lucas, it’s as true now as it was when he was five: there is absolutely nowhere else he’d rather be.
